ARNULF RAINER: DURCH GALERIEN UND MUSEEN
26.02.2026 – 20.03.2026
In the exhibition ARNULF RAINER: THROUGH GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS, original works by the artist are presented alongside a selection of exhibition posters. The originals and the posters are not placed in direct thematic relation to one another; instead, they form two parallel approaches: on the one hand, the immediate artistic work, and on the other, Arnulf Rainer’s presence within the structures of the exhibition world.
On view are original works from the 1950s to the early 1990s. Overpaintings and works on paper reveal various phases in the development of his oeuvre. This selection is complemented by posters spanning several decades of exhibition history, primarily from Austrian galleries and museums. They testify to Arnulf Rainer’s public visibility while also standing as independent graphic objects in which his unmistakable visual language is reflected. Today, many of these posters are themselves regarded as artistically and historically significant collector’s items. A number of the original designs for the posters are held in the collection of the MAK Museum Vienna.
At the exhibition opening, Prof. Dr Helmut Zambo, collector and long-standing companion of Arnulf Rainer, will give a talk. Following his lecture, there will be an opportunity for personal conversation.
