Fritz Wotruba - 3 Figures

July 25, 2025

At the beginning of his artistic career, Fritz Wotruba (1907–1975) sought to distance himself from the Viennese Jugendstil and Expressionism, and began experimenting with abstracted, rounded forms. From the 1950s onward, he shifted his focus away from human anatomy and toward shapes guided by structural and tectonic principles. Monumental, block-like figures emerged, composed of basic forms such as cubes, rectangular blocks, tubes, cylinders, as well as columns and pillars. The changes in his style are clearly visible in this sheet from 1953.

Fritz Wotruba is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. His artistic legacy and influence on modern sculpture remain tangible to this day. His works are celebrated in exhibitions and museums around the world.
